Education

All children aged from 5 – 16 must receive a state education.  Most children attend school from Monday to Friday every week. Others are taught at home following permission by the Local Education Authority. Education is free up until University stage. There are many schools in Cardiff and it is probably best to apply to schools near to home.

Primary schools are for children aged between 4 – 11. They are situated all over Cardiff and information is available about all schools by accessing their websites which can be found via www.yell.com

The schools which are called ‘Independent’ are private schools which have to be paid for.

Adults are also able to continue education in their chosen subject or for basic skills such as reading, writing and numeracy.

For information about adult education and further education ....................................

University places are available and if the fees cannot be met, it is possible to apply for a Government loan.

This loan is repayable when full time employment is secured following the education period. A small percentage of income is taken from salaries. The exact amount differs according to salary and will be decided at the time that employment commences.

There are other places where there is free help with English language and other skills or even just as an opportunity to meet people from the area. They are all run on a voluntary basis by people who want to help newcomers to settle into the communities. These places are sometimes called “Drop In “ centres which means it is not necessary to make an appointment. Many are located in churches but this does not mean that they are based upon any particular religion. Some of these places are listed below.
