Doctors, Dentists and the NHS

Once suitable accommodation has been found it will be necessary to register with a
local GP (Doctor) and a Dentist.

These GP services are FREE from the national Health Service (NHS). Prescriptions
(medicines) are also free in Wales. Dental services are FREE to all those receiving benefits.
To register with a doctor and a dentist it is necessary to find some that will deal with
NHS patients (National Health Service).
It is necessary to find out where they are situated. It is a good idea to ask someone who
lives locally for this information.  Ask:

  • A neighbour (someone who lives in your street)
  • People working in a local shop
  • The Postman (delivers mail to your home each morning)
  • The Housing offcer
  • The Local Library staff

Look at the NHS website – www.wales.nhs.uk for a complete list of all GPs and Dentists in
Cardiff.  This site also has lots of useful information about healthcare and hospitals.

To ask about a GP surgery with vacancies ring 029 2037 6820

If someone is very unwell and cannot wait to visit a GP surgery  (this is called an
emergency) you can ring 999 which will put you through to the emergency services.
They will ask you if an ambulance is needed, the fire service or the Police.
If the call is not an emergency, ring NHS Direct 0845 4647 which is a medical helpline
number.  They will give instructions about know what to do next.  They may give an
address of the nearest emergency health care centre or they may send an ambulance to
come and take the patient straight to hospital.  They will make the decision based on
what information is given to them on the telephone.
